As Guyana marks 59 years of Independence, the Guyana Trades Union Congress (GTUC) pays tribute to the generations of workers whose courage, sacrifices, and leadership laid the foundation for our nation’s freedom on May 26, 1966.
Independence must be more than a date—it must carry real meaning, especially for those who helped secure it. The Labour Movement, beginning with the establishment of the Trade Union Movement in 1926, was at the heart of the fight for self-rule. It was the workers who marched, mobilized, and resisted colonial domination.
Today, in 2025, Guyana stands as an emerging economic powerhouse, boasting a $1.38 trillion (US$6.63 billion) economy and projected oil revenues of US$2.8 billion. Yet, for many workers, the economic gains remain out of reach. Despite the headlines, the reality on the ground tells a different story—one of daily struggles and unmet promises.
For the working class, this is not a moment of mixed feelings—it’s a reminder that the fight is far from over. The Trade Union Movement remains unwavering in its commitment to a just and equitable Guyana—one where workers are valued, their rights upheld, and their contributions fairly rewarded.
As we commemorate this 59th Independence Anniversary, GTUC calls on all Guyanese to reflect not only on how far we’ve come, but on the road still ahead. Our ancestors didn’t just dream of freedom—they fought for it. We honour them best by continuing that fight: for justice, dignity, and a future where prosperity is truly shared.
Happy Independence, Guyana. Let us ensure it means something—for everyone.
